$25 Alder Tree, ADVICE PLEASE :)

Post by Pat093 »

Hi All,

I have been posting alot this week due to my new stock i have acquired and amoungst this new stock was this fairly old Alder Tree that i bought for $25 buks bare rooted.
Saturday arvo I potted it in a large pot, and now my plans are to let it get some foilage and branches about it.
But my reason for posting is to ask anyone who has worked with this sp. and how well they bonsai? I am currently reading about them myself and would love some of your knowledge and advice on future style for this tree. :?:

Hi pat I find it easier to buy or find bigger stock if you want bigger trees unless you dont mind waiting for a couple of years. :)

I agree with Chris re the size and the stock size
We get too old too quick to wait till trees grow up, I have a few in the ground, but have lots of others that will be smaller size to play with in the meantime :-)

Nice stock and i believe alder make a real nice Bonsai specimen, but have never seem on in the bark
We have an entry for alsoer in our Wiki species Guide but no info yet so you can help us fill it in if you like :-)

:gday: Pat, mate Alder can make very nice Bonsai. I nearly had a great Alder a few years ago but circumstances at the time ment i didn't end up getting it :shake: . i still to this day wish i had. With your stock i'd be chosing a leader/leaders and then growing the shari out of it to try fattenning the trunk, leaving the lowest branch/es for sacrifices,, it already has some appeal and should turn into a nice tree in years to come.. :fc:

Thanks Craig, have you got any knowledge as how they respond to pruning and wat fert i should use?
At the moment i have it in my home made mix with the big roots under the soild to thicker up and i have mixed osmocote and some dynamic lifter with it :)
It seems to be budding nicely in most places.
