3 year plan

Hi all,

I recently moved house and have gotten lucky with the front garden, consisting of 4 maples, unsure of which type hopefully someone could clarify on that one for me also.

But back to my plan, basically I've given myself 3 to 4 years to get these out of the ground and on to my benches all but one smaller one have great bases on them and I just can't wait to find the nebari under the soil






Just for size.

I will be pulling the high branches down with rope on all of them to make the future air layers safer to carry out, and easier to remove if and when they are ready to come off.

The smaller one, I am unsure of whether I will layer or not. It is the second photo of the foliage.

So yeah, looking at 3 years till my first big maples on my bench

Any advice or links to other threads you feel may be helpful to this would be greatly appreciated too.

All look like Acer Palmatum (Japanese Maple) to me..

All look like MASSIVE stock that I can't see being too suitable for Bonsai.
Layers - absolutely..

Bonsai well maybe a 5-10 year plan could be more accurate..

Cheers for the ident boics. The three years is just to get them out of the ground, I somewhat suspect that they will become a life project once in pots though. And they may be a bit big to be considered bonsai, but I will be if all goes well of course, employing the same techniques of bonsai on them.

Hopefully I'll get some good forest setups out of the layers though. Should be fun, and will keep posted.

Any Styled tree in a pot can be Bonsai, and in Asia there are some several meters tall.
Look for the movement in the branches to make interesting layers from, and re the stumps, again look for the best features to develop over the next 15 or so years

Being only 25 ken, I think I will take my time with these guys, and try and make something special, there are some really good sections of the trees that would be ideal for single tree and pot set up. And a lot of straight sections which will hopefully be a good forest. So fingers crossed.

What is the root system like on those? Is it safe to have them that close to the house? Probably good you have a plan to get them out of the ground!

The three larger trees have been there since the early 80's and the smaller one since the mid 90's, and the house is on a brick foundation so I think it should be ok in the near future anyway.
