Wow Mark, what a nice Juniper and really good carving, how did I miss your previous thread on this tree in 2010? To me it looks a like Juniperus x media 'Pfitzeriana'.
Cheers,

Hi Guys
Just want to share an update of the tree in late winter (2 months ago) after doing a bit of clean-up and wiring:
It is now much fuller and I anticipate that the foliage will be even more compact this season.

beautiful juniper Mark. May I make a suggestion. The lowest pad is crouding the trunk, move it out a little and create some negative space.

This tree has to be one of the best, if not THE best juniper in Australia.
Does any one want to challenge that with a pic of a similar quality juniper? Must be in this country of course.
Mark, did you design and style this tree yourself from scratch?
Also, is it a Shimpaku?

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Nice virt Chris, I like where you are going with the lowest branch, will definitely be something I'll be looking at down the line, maybe slightly less extended then what is shown in your virt, but same idea.
Hackimoto,
Yes, the tree was designed and styled by me from collected garden material more than 10 years ago. The cascading branch was actually the apex of the tree. It was bent more than 180 degrees to bring it down to form what is now the signature branch of the tree. No, this is not a Shimpaku, I think it is a Juniperus X media 'Pfitzeriana' (thanks Mojo). The foliage was really leggy when I first started. Took me a quite a few growing seasons to get it to compact.

Re: Juniper - 9 years in a pot (Preparation for WA Bonsai Show)
Hi Everyone
This weekend was the first time I have ever showed a tree. It was a great experience, and I must say, there were a lot of great trees at the show. As I was quite busy on the weekend, I did not take any photos at the exhibit (but I am sure some of the WA members will post some pictures up pretty soon). Anyway, while I was cleaning the tree up last weekend, I thought I would take some better photos of my tree and played around with display ideas for my personal enjoyment. The first two displays uses more Chinese elements while the last is mainly japanese.
Here is the tree with an antique jade lion dating from the early Qing dynasty.
Here is the tree with a Chinese painting that has been in the family for more than 20 years. I thought the painting is suitable as it shows a winter image and we are already into the last month of autumn.
This is the final setup I went with at the exhibition. The suiseki is a Furuya-ishi Hut Stone.
Overall, it was a fun weekend playing around with display ideas at home and also a good opportunity to take better quality pictures of the tree.
Thanks for viewing!

Excellent tree, thanks for posting the progression and discussing how you thought. The Chinese painting is a very dramatic companion to the tree, in my opinion.

Awesome stuff.
Quality.
Quality.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful
