Leigh Taafe Demo - AABC 2013

Post by Leigh Taafe »

Hi,

I promised to post a pic of the tree I did as a demo after a bit more work.

This is a 1980 Shimpaku Juniper.
My demo was to restyle it.
It has thinned out quite a lot, I will post another picture in a years time when it has filled out the new pads nicely.

Unfortunately, the photo doesn't show the small refined pads - but they will fill out.

I have two options for a pot:

IMG_5021.jpg
I cant find an original pic of this tree. I will keep searching to see if I can find a "before"

Hi Leigh,

I really like your Juni now, that has come up a treat and really evokes many emotions in me as the viewer. I could see it a few different places in the wild where it wouldn't look out of place. Ah, the tree that gave birth to your avatar. I much prefer it now than the way it was, the change in planting angle has highlighted the strong trunk.

I like both options of pots, the first is a pot I have not see before, its like its where freeform, meets angles and it would look good in it. The purist in me says the 2nd option as the drum would suit the tree just as much, if not more than the first. If they were the only two options to go with, while it would look good in the first pot, it would look even better in the 2nd, I just feel there is something missing with the composition of the tree plus pot 1.

Thanks for sharing this tree and I look forward to watching it progress.

Cheers

David

Hi Leigh firstly congrats on the curator's position. I like it in the first pot myself - is that one of Penny's pots ?

Thanks Damian - I did a demo a couple of years ago at BBTH and used a similar pot.

Thanks David, when it comes to repotting, I will try both pots and see which one I like best.

Hello Leigh,

Against all others, I prefer pot 2 with this juniper. Although the first pot has character, I don't think the style or colour suits this species, or this specimen.

I agree with James, pot two.

Nice work on this one Leigh, I'll admit that I wasn't sure what you'd end up with but I'd be proud to have that on my bench.

Are you finding that you are reaching more for the copper now days? I feel that it makes the work more precise.

Scott.

Looks good now mate, 2nd pot for sure. The 1st is too deep and free form for this well structured tree.
Looks like you changed the front and planting angle since the convention demo?

Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback. I will give this one a good rest after all the work and pot him up in September this year. I will try both pots and post the pics here for some more opinions.

Yes Shan - I think I had it more vertical, which could still be done - I will see how it recovers and assess it at repotting time.
Cheers,
Leigh.

Hi Leigh,
Pot no 1 has more character and reflects the rugged environment where the tree would be in nature, especially looking at the angle you planting it and the location of your jin as well!
Pot no 2, whilst a very nice pot ..... it's just another drum pot - with the dots actually overpowering the tree. :imo:

Cheers, Rudi

P.S. Marlene likes no 1 better …. just can’t win, can you?

But, I still would go with no 1! ;)
