Hi there nice olives myself i train them as soon as i can wire the branches you will be amazed at what can be achieved in the first year with olives that just want to grow i would leave them be threw winter but by mid spring you should be able to get some wire onto them

Hey OC... thanks for the links. i always enjoy your updates on a seemingly endless supply of quality (and enormous) yamadori olives.

I need to consider it for awhile as i cant think of a design for either of them yet. at any rate there's going to be a fair bit of carving on both of them and once thats done there's no going back, so i dont want to bugger it up. If you've got any design ideas i'd love to see them if you have time to knock up a quick virt.

Here is a very quick virt of the 1st olive (sorry for crappy picture tho ) i think it will work great ill try to draw both these trees up over the next few weeks

Thanks OC. Definitely a good option and different to what I had thought of. What are you indicating with the blue line? I assume red line is chop?

Eggsactly the tree I saw when I first laid eyes on that tree O.C. I reckon she would be a ripper in no time flat. I'd use the string line as the spot for the second cut, so also waiting to hear the reason for your blue line.

People have told me Olives are slow growers, but my guess is those people haven't really ever tried one. I find I am trimming mine constantly when they are growing - and that is most of the time. I have been getting a break of late, but while watering this morning I noticed a couple of them are just starting to wake up again.

Hi the blue line is where i would cut back to an leave to make as a jin later i all ways leave my options open for as long as i can as for olives being slow growing some can be where others grow like weeds. If this tree shoots well an buds in the right places i can see the branches wired into place an you starting to fill out the foliage pads by this time next yr

So i need some advice here guys.

The triple trunk continues to put out shoots but they die off after pushing about 2-3 sets of leaves. I figured it might be dying and just pushing out from stored energy. But a small scratch of the trunk reveals nice green cambium.

The tree is in well drained soil, full sun and only gets watered when needed (to encourage root growth). It started with a lot of seasol but now gets it about once a month. What else can i do to help it along?

As a note, the other tree hasn't pushed any growth but has the same results to the scratch test.

I appreciate any help offered.

One question mate. Do those pots have plenty of drain holes? Is there any chance of taking a photo of the bottom of the pot?

Thanks for the response. I'm pretty sure I drilled extra holes in the bottom. I cant remember 100% though. I'll get some pictures tomorrow or saturday and see what's there.

This should improve the drainage quite a bit.
