Propagation by cuttings

The reason I mentioned crushed Granite I thought it might be easier for Members in the Eastern states to acquire. Aquarium shops sell gravel for the fish tanks! it is more expensive this way.

Any honey will do, as Brett has pointed out not creamed. It is also not a hormone it is a fungicide, which in turn stop any rotting of the wood before it callouses and starts forming roots.

When I do use rooting hormones I use the liquid one as this sticks to the wood better I find.

Has anyone every tried rockwool blocks from Hydro stores? http://grodan101.com/products/grodan-st ... gro-blocks They range in size from 1inch cube upwards and start at $1 each.

Something else to look at is [In an aquarium]

* River sand/gravel will soften the water and lower the pH.
*Crushed Granite will harden the water and raise the pH.

[Dont know if this would apply to soil pH]

Now does that help with propagation????

Never had a problem with PH and with a strike rate of between 80/90 percent, using either crushed granite or Carnarvon river gravel/sand plus coco peat.

The reason as I said before not sure you can get Carnarvon river sand/ gravel, unless Grant Bowie has any to spare.

I have had garden centers for donkey years, and propagated all my plants.
I did my first steps with those little containers the photographic films come into...and are trown away after you give your film to be developed. Just made a hole on the bottom. I have always used river sand...sieved and washed...nothing else...no hormones...The first trials for difficult cuttings were in an old aquarium....but any container will do....with some water in it, and a plastic tied over it.
I have had fantastic results. Now need to try the honey bit.
Pup, I use potashium permanganate to disinfect all my old even new potting mix. It is very cheap, kills everything, harmless to the plants and neutralises within few hours.
I got the idea from my Koi...You use it to kill parasites /bacteria in Koi ponds, and also bath your Koi in it. 1g in 5-10 liters of water will do. Put your medium in a bucket and poor that on top till covered.
within 2-3 hours it will turn brown...meaning it is neutralized.
some time I just water the pots with it. I have never tried it with a plant in the pot though. It is a strong oxidizer.
