Normal cost for Japanese pot?

I've seen this gorgeous 14.5cm rectangular turquoise pot on eBay and I want it, but it's $260 plus postage! I know it's someone's art, but that seems very expensive. Unfortunately I've not seen anything like it, in terms of colour and the random black speckles.

That could be a reasonable cost - then you would have postage as well ? Have you considered having a pot made by a local potter ? You can commission a pot and ask for a similar glaze for a lot less than that.

A japanese mass produced pot of that size can sell for as little as $15-20(new), what you are paying for is that its a handmade pot by a well known potter who is in demand(at present). Like all arts its the resellers who make the big bucks while most artists struggle to make a living...

Having a fair idea of the pot Beano is looking at I highly doubt any local potter will be able to reproduce that glaze...

Yes, just had a look and a stunning pot. Remember that it will become collectable in the future and will probably go up with patina. Like anything though, if you really like it then go for it, that is my motto.

It could also become less valuable.. thats the problem with trends, they come & go...

I think thats a great pot, and not too small!

Maybe a little more than I'd want to pay, but that's the hand made price. You could get a similar 'production' koyo for about half (I bought three from Yorozuen last year, oval though not rectangle), not quite the same glaze.

Its all about personal taste.

Errrr I asked a local potter (my dad) if he could replicate this pot and glaze. He said any potter (or yr 11 art student could). Basic slab pot, $15.

I'm having 30 raku pots made ATM. Wood fired kiln. 500 yr old japanese technique. THEY are something to behold!
When they are ready ill post some pics
