prunus elvins!

Good morning ausbonsai'ers,
Found someone prunus elvins yesterday about 2meters tall trunk base 3-4 inches through for $15 barerooted. Has anyone tried these.wondering if they lend themselves well to bonsai techniques. For 15 bucks I don't think I could go wrong,they are
Field grown for a dig your own sort if setup. Also
Wondering if it would pose a problem with the weather being changing very dramatically very cold at night and pretty warm during the day, Im afraid the bareroot tree season is coming to and end really quickly. could anyone with exp please chime in and help as I'm sort if in two minds

If its not grafted it might be ok. If you get to pick a trunk you like it would be a pretty good deal. I don't know the variety though.

As for season it relates more to the length of the day than temperature. Once you've got the one you want just sit it under some shelter until you've passed the worst frosts. I still have an almond, planted from seed, that has leaves on it.

The grafts are reasonable but there are two that are perfectly matched scions,
These two that I earmarked are really flawlesly calloused grafts. Which in my Opinion is very rare in todays commercial market. I'm pretty sure they are a double flowered variety. We are still experiencing really short days

Without seeing the grafts I'm just going to trust your judgement. . You've picked two so that's a start. If it comes to it you can air layer the graft off.

The almond I mentioned is actually budding now, so just keep frost away from them until it established some roots. I guess.

Hi Jade,
You should have no trouble digging and pruning these now. Prunus are pretty tough and will cope with hard root pruning, even if the buds have started to open they should still survive the experience and the first buds to open are only flowers anyway.
Prunus Elvins is a variety that produces masses of double flowers in spring and should make a spectacular flowering bonsai. I have some cuttings growing on at the moment but very small.
