Pinus contorta

Post by Grant Bowie »

Hi all,

This is a small tree that may be around 20 years old. It may have been collected as a seed in maybe Canada and may have fallen into a pocket of a jacket which maybe then got on a plane to Australia where it may have fallen out of the pocket and into some handy(allegedly) potting mix and may have germinated.

I acquired this tree about 2 years ago but never got around to doing anything; as you can see.

Started work on it this week.

It is an amazing species of pine! Short needles, extremely flexible, almost impossible to break and buds back freely.

There are many ways to do things, but only one "best" way.

Jins were hard to make as the wood is almost elastic and won't break. Tearing/peeling it is also difficult. Never seen anything like it.

The bark at the very bottom took a beating but will be OK.

End of work day 1.

Hi ya Grant I did have one about 6 years ago thought it was, as you say great. It was very easy to work. Settled very quickly into Bonsai culture.
Then a western Australian summer came along, so be aware they do not like heat even a minor one of 32, it was cared for like all my other trees.

It did not however last a month of medium temps :( pity, as it was a nice looking shohin in the offing have not seen any more to try again.

Cheers Pup

hi pup,

the tree has survived the last 20 years here in Canberra so it may be hardened off. Anyhow I will keep in mind what you say. Coastal Canada is vastly different to Canberra, that's for sure.
