Is this a good idea
I'm thinking of taking a cutting and putting it in the ground then let it grow big but not too big and then I will do layers and cuttings off that tree

And are there any pro's and con'S

I think there is a lot of merit in doing this. Feed it heaps and let it crow. One advantage is that you don't have to worry about what the roots look like. They can grow whatever shape they want. The layers and cuttings are what you are looking for. Make sure you take Tony's advise and keep it away from any pipes.

You could get some decent size layers and develop them.

It's worth the trouble.
I'm doing it already on a ficus benjamina.
Got cuttings and air-layers out of it.
Also wiring parts of the tree to make cascade and semi-cascade structures.
Only warning would be to plan ahead or identify structures of interest early on and work on them early.
I did waste some 2 years to get some decent structures.
