Winter Fig Work - root over rock

Post by Biofusion »

hello people,

i had two figs that i needed to do something with, they are both not so much to look at, but have future potential. one fig that I did a very late defoliation on, and the other was a fig that a friend gave me, he was planning on doing a terrarium and i originally potted it up for him, but he got bored with it so he gave it back to me, along with the rocks i have planted them on, which are two Yingshi rocks, so i decided i would use them.

I barerooted both of the figs, mixed up some packing soil to put around the roots and got my pre-mixed soil to plant the rest in.

After my first successful root over rock this year, using spagnum moss around the roots and then wrapping with cling wrap, I decided i would try it again but this time with a soil in the mix too, so i mixed 50/50 spagnum moss with potting soil into a fine, crumby, mucky type of mix, and packed this around the roots after the plants were placed on the rocks.

The mix in the rest of the pot is 50% succulent mix, 30% diatomite, 20% zeolite.

I then watered in some blood and bone with a mixture in my watering can of molasses, seaweed powder and epsom salts.

pictures are below.

I wrapped the figs by laying out the cling wrap and sitting the rock and fig on top of it, and then packing the muck around the roots and folding the cling wrap up around the sides. After it was secured i then wrapped it tighter around the rock and the roots, then i cut the bottom and the sides of the cling wrap that were hanging down and rolled them up around the sides of the rocks, exposing the roots and then placing them into the grow box.

The other objective to this project, apart from trying out my muck mix on the roots, is too see how early i can work these things, the fig on the left is healthy, the fig on the right, powering on but somewhat weak due to the late defoliation.

Interesting :lost:
What is the temp where you live at present?
Not that I need more trees to repot, I can't even keep up with the deciduous at present :palm:

Too cold to repot figs :imo:
Should wait till the nighttime temps stay above 15 deg C
Keep them warm and next to a North wall if you can

Winter Fig Work - root over rock

Hi ken, the idea of this experiment is to, as I stated, see how far I can push these things.

Nothing ventured nothing gained.
