Shohin Prunus mume - White Flowering Apricot

G'day,

I picked this one up on the sales tables at the 2012 AABC convention in Melbourne. It was repotted last year into this Mudlark pot and last night I put a bit of wire on.

P. mume seem to have a funny growth habit. The shoots only had 1 growth spurt last year and although they put on about 30cm length, once trimmed they never grew again. This year I will trim early and see if I can get a second flush of growth.

If anyone has experience with these please let me know the timing of trimming and pruning.

I'll be continuing on the ramification and hope to achieve a nice natural looking tree in a few years.

It's currently 250mm high and 280mm wide.

I don't know them well, but they shoot again for me. I've had trouble ramifying all the prunus family (mume, cerasifera and blireana) - when cut back, they will often shoot only from the last bud, not the second or third last. Main prune after flowering. Officially, repot after flowering, but I'm experimenting with repotting before flowering because the leaves always start to open before the flowers have finished, and I'm not happy repotting with fresh new leaf shoots. They seem to suit larger trees.

Sorry Dave, can't advise about the back budding yet as this is my first adventure with P. mume. I'm just fumbling my way along

Buds have started to swell over the last couple of days and I'm looking forward to seeing if I can encourage more than the one growth spurt this year

It's shape is really starting to fill out. I can picture it now with small fruit. What an amazing sight that will be.

Main prune after flowering.

I've been having problems with branches dying back after pruning. I'll try this approach this year.

I've just cut six dead branchlets off a P. cerasifera - it seems that there are major dominance issues, if one twig grows at all strongly, others on the same branch may die off. They can be a bit frustrating as a genus, but then the flowers explode and everything's wonderful!
