Thanks for the visuals

is your tray metal (galvanized/tin?) and is the gravel just nice round stones, or is it that fired clay balls used for hydro?

You could use anything to make the tray but mine is made from Alucobond.
Gravel is 10mm bluemetal and 6mm peagravel.

This is Melaleuca acerosa , starting stages. 42 Mice pot.

thanks Craig, funny how the small pot sizes makes the gravel look deceptively big, the 10mm blue metal looks like chunks of slate

should be a life saver in summer though

Yup. Keeping moisture at the base of the pot is very effective.

Bonsai Tonight also removes topmost layer of soil and adds spagnum moss. I'd need to add some pepper gravel over that.

Last summer I successfully used little denim mats (or collars, over the surface of the pots) which keep the sun off the soil.

I'm contemplating a full blown Coolgardie Safe for the little'uns this summer.

My very first bonsai was one I bought in Japan...like the small pot with the coin, Japanese maple...Lasted less than week...So I am scared I will kill them...Maybe to use a succulent that dont dry so easy.

Thanks Pup, I appreciate the kind words. The pot itself has more meaning than any other in my collection, it comes from my first ever friend in Bonsai whom I befriend over 15 years ago and it was only recently we caught up. Amazing what an innocent comment on facebook can do lol

I can't wait for some of his next batch, also thanks to Matt my appreciation for local talent has increased tenfold and will be from now on wanting to source our local talent first than looking elsewhere.

I've procured an Ikea "Socker" greenhouse which should keep the wind out and the humidity in. Clearly it will be in full shade (and probably inside in really hot weather)

Thanks Ken, I agree the last two do need alot of development although with the little fig in the 2nd pic, it was in this grow tub for a year.....
