Lovely tree Craig.
If only your photography were "tack sharp" this one would be drawing obligatory ooh's and aah's that it deserves.
How big is this one mate?

Re: Carpinus betulus
Yes I know my photography sucks. It was my first teacher Nel Saffins favourite tree and I was very fond of Nel so the tree is kind of special to me. Also once smooth bark trees reach the 30 year mark they seem to start developing really beautiful bark and thats happening to this one now.

Print's not that fine! Silly me
Love the tree.
Such a cool thing to have some 30 years of history right there.

Thanks Jeremy, I have always advocated growing trees which suit your climate and for me thats deciduous. Its 30 years this year since I first started bonsai so I don't think i'll be stopping just yet.

Do you mind if I use?

There are many ways to do things, but only one "best" way.

Re: Carpinus betulus
You should use the quote Boics because its very true with one proviso that is you don't have too many trees, on a number of occasions I have visited older growers with huge collections and nothing was properly maintained, less trees means more maintenance and thats essential.
Re bonsai age there is not such a huge difference between 25 and 30.
