Post by Beano »

Anyone know what these are? I sprayed them with mortein but don't really want to eat them now.Image

Mate I think they are black aphids. Just to note though I would eat shallots with mortean sprayed all over them

Natural ways to deal with aphids is a spray of garlic water. Will probably give your shallots a unique taste though.

Thanks! I thought aphids were supposed to be tiny? Anyway, I'm guessing these eat bonsai, but if they are so attracted to my shallots, perhaps I should leave them there as a distractor away from my trees?

Garlic spray sounds interesting.

They are spring onions Allium Fistulosum (damn newsouthwelshmen - thisis a shallot Allium cepa ).

And they are most likely aphids. High pressure hose will set them back a lot. Garlic water; chili (or chilli :tounge: ) water ; tobacco water or plain old Pyrethrum will do the deed.

You should tell Coles and woolworths that they are naming them incorrectly too. Now I know.

Yeah, definately don't eat them after mortein. That stuff aint healthy :shake:

There are a few things you can do for aphid, garlic/chilli spray is probaby easiest and best. Here is a simple way to make it: http://www.vegetable-gardening-made-sim ... spray.html

Google will also give you a fair few different remedies too, just make sure they're natural if you're going to eat them :tu2:

These are black aphids and common to see plants covered with them during this time of year. Over the years, I've tried different sprays of one sort or another and at the end, I find the cheapest and most efficient way is to just knock them all off with a hose set with a fine strong nozzle. They might come back in a week so just spray again. You will find they will be gone once summer gets close.

Jet them off every couple days-----If you knock them off with a water jet I don't think they can crawl back up--
