does anyone know what it is?? and do you have any tips for looking after it?

I think its a cherry of some type. But it could be a plum. So Prunus.

It was collected at the right time and the new growth is positive. If it doesn't have much root I would keep out of too much sun during the day. If it has some roots then just keep giving it some seasol and let it grow for a while.
Patience is often a surprise.

Hi PAUL2229 , Mate its a Prunus -Flowering Plum .Looks like a copper bronze colour so it may have pink or white flowers , depending on the species . They are relatively tough buggers , but i have killed a few with shear neglect and lack of water .

Keep moist but not wet and it should grow well , bit like a noxious weed . Allow this seasons growth to run riot , training a new leader as it grows leaving the rest to produce the root's your after .Good luck

Cheers Alpineart

Definitely a plum. If you collected it its likely to be one of the small fruited 'cherry plums' - possibly Prunus cerasifera and with the puplish leaves probably a dark red fruiting one.

The Bendigo bonsai growers are specialists in plum bonsai :imo: If you search 'miyagiman + plum' you should get some good threads on yamadori plums from around Bendigo area.
