I finally had some spare time to do a bit of work on this under-loved Shimpaku. My intention with this little tree is to illustrate what can be done with fairly ordinary and undeveloped stock in a short time.

After a bit of late night head scratching, I was able to commit to a preferred front that got away from the dead straight main trunk, while still allowing a suitable angle to utilise the low branch on the left as a second trunk.

The tree 45mins later with the primary and secondary trunks wired and movement put into a previously bland tree. Despite the relatively thin trunk, it was a little resistant to bending, so went a little harder until I heard it crack a couple of times.

Now that the tree is basically laid out structurally, I plan to use the the remaining styling time refining the branches and enhancing the image of the tree. I expect that I will be able to get a decent amount of definition and a full canopy on this tree over the next 18 months. In the next week or so I will pot the tree into a more free draining media, I'm not sure of what container yet. I will most likely re-pot this tree twice before the competition ends, perhaps waiting as late as Sept 2014 for the tree to go into it's final pot.

That's all for now.

Cheers,
Mojo

An update of sorts.

Not much has changed with this tree except a change of colour for winter. The tree is doing fine following the initial wiring and styling despite being root bound in this pot since at least 2005! I may slip pot into a free draining mix and container if the weather turns very wet before spring.

Cheers,
Mojo

Withdrawn. Will continue to develop in time period allocated outside of the competition. Dropped this into a cut down nursery pot in July to allow better drainage through winter, colour has gradually returned to green indicating root activity. Will re-pot in the next 2 weeks, this should be a quite presentable little Juniper that would have been competitive.

Cheers,
Mojo
