I am an idiot... Now what?

Post by Raymond »

So as the title says, I am an idiot :palm: . I was tending to some of my trees yesterday and in my haste I have broken a major branch off my fig. This pic doesn't really show the damage because it is an old pic, but, I have broken off the second branch on the right hand side as you look at it. I will post a pic in the morning of what I am left with but there is a major whole in the design of my tree... IDIOT!!

If it hasnt been sepperated to long stick the branch back on straight away and bind it tightly, no different to a graft really. Worth a try.
You'll just need to remember it will be weaker so be careful when working on it in the future.

If it is still attached you might be able to superglue it back on.

If not then Its more clip and grow.

When you graft a branch you take a branch off one tree and attach to another. This is no different is it. The join/cambium would be a perfect match so would it not just be like a perfect fitting graft. The fact it's been off for a day may affect its ability to reattach but you've got nothing to loose. I have a trident with a branch reattached. I am just extra careful when working on that branch.

Don't stress too much mate, could just mean a new direction for the tree.

As Josh has said though, you still might be able to save it :)

Bad luck. :shake:

I suggest a radical trunk chop then.

As said, maybe a trunk chop is in order?

Accidents happen. It is just the way thing go sometimes.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Now you have to move on.

So you can probably feed the tree and see if you get a bud in that area to re-grow the branch.

Try a thread graft rather than waiting for the serendipity of a bud in the right place.

Or, go the big trunk chop and get rid of 2/3 of the straight trunk.

Choice depends on how formal you want the tre to be . . .

It's not the end of the world. Bend another branch around , thread graft it in and away you. You'll need to keep the othe others in check while letting HHS graft run free to catch up but not hard to do. Take it as an opportunity to practice your thread grafts lol.
