Crazy stupid Chinese Elm Test

Post by Bray »

So tonight I cut a branch off the Chinese Elm thats planted out the front of my house and decided I wanted to try something really different. I've done thousands of cuttings the normal way, but I wanted to see if it will work like this.

I cut the branch off, cut off some lower branches and skinned a little bit of bark off on two sides of the end of the branch. I then cut a hole in a basic pot from work, about an inch lower than where the top of the soil is. Dipped the end of the branch in some honey and slipped it in the hole. Wired it just so it holds its "upright" position and watered it with a little seaweed. Will be interesting to see if its inclined to shoot roots or die.

Sounds like you have lots more experience with cuttings than me, but don't you usually take most of the foliage off to prevent transpiration loss? If leaving that much foliage has worked for you in the past, maybe I'll try it myself. I'll be interested to see the updates on this one.

Yeah I agree, I probably should cut all the foliage off as all the cuttings we do at work have very little foliage on it
