Compost Worms?

Post by Drac0 »

Anyone know where I can get reasonably priced compost worms on the south coast of NSW? Heading to western Sydney on Sunday so if there's somewhere I can get some on the day between Nowra & there (ie: Wollongong, Campbelltown, Liverpool, Penrith or there abouts) that would be great.

Cheers

Hi Draco,
I find that compost worms are so common now that if you make a good environment for them they will soon turn up and start breeding. Build a compost heap and keep it damp.
They are great escape artists so do not assume they are only in worm farms. When I lived at my old farm I accidentally introduced them into the vegetable patch. In just a few months they had crossed about 300metres of open paddock and arrived in the house garden. If anybody in the area has some they will soon get to your place if conditions are right.

Might just have to place the worm farm tray straight on the ground & set up a bistro for them.

Did learn that it has been scientifically shown they can 'smell' food up to 100 metres away. Nobody knows how but apparently they do. And while I have access to a compost heap, surprisingly very, very few worms present - probably because there is so much straight garden waste & not a lot of tasty worm food.......
