Serissa Foetida

Post by Shinkitai »

This is a progression Serissa I have had for a number of years. It was originally a cutting which I then ground grew for a few years. Whilst in the ground I removed any extra trunks sprouting every few months, isolated some main branches and cut the foliage back when it started to get a bit wild. In 2010 I transferred it from the ground to a patio pot as the first stage of progression into a bonsai pot. In September 2012 I then transferred to a bonsai pot. Originally it sat a bit high in the pot, but have got it to sit a little lower in this years repotting. At various times it is covered in 100's of the little white flowers. It takes a bit of work to keep it under control but is worth the effort as I have not seen many of this size around.

Height is 450mm
Base Width is 45mm

Great example, I love the serissa but found them to be very sensitive. I'm impressed.

Oh i am so glad to see that other people have issues with the suckers on their tree. What do you do other than cut them back at very regular intervals? Do you ever put wire on them or do you just use clip and grow? I find them SO very brittle and have to be careful when trying to style, as they don't forgive at all, just a little too much and 'crack' and then #$%&*#@$#$$. I wondered if there was some way to cauterize or stifle the suckers to reduce the energy going into them....

Great tree and wonderful to see the progression. You mention that it grew from a cutting. What sort of size and diameter was the original cutting and did you do anything special - ie cutting powder, split the base etc? You may not remember though being a few years ago.

Thanks for the post!

The cutting was just a thin off cut. I used rooting hormone the purple one I think. I have never had any trouble with the cuttings. It seems to be about the second year that they get temperamental. As I have lost a few at that stage.

I use a little bit of wiring but predominantly clip and grow.

As for the suckers, they just suck!
