Wanted: Elaeocarpus angustifolius aka bluefig or quandong

Post by bonborn »

These are mainly found on the eastern side of Australia. Has beautiful blue berries which has a hard rough seed inside commonly used to make jewellery and as a religious item for the hindus.

I am after seeds or plants.

Hi
The tree you refer to as Elaeocarpus angustifolius is more generally called (and sold as) Elaeocarpus grandis in Australia. It grows as far south as Nambucca Heads and should do alright in your area. It is one of the fastest growing trees I have ever encountered and becomes quite massive. Not sure how it will do as a bonsai. Commonly available from North Coast native and regen nurseries. Try Firewheel nursery at Durroughby: http://www.firewheelnursery.com.au/ . They may be able to post plants to you.

I have quite a few seedlings. As Peter said they are very fast growing. I have one I planted about 3 years ago and is nearly 10m tall. They don't branch down low but tend to develop one leader and shoot straight up even when chopped. Although I have only cut seedlings/saplings not thicker trunked trees. Are you intending them for Bonsai?

I wouldn't mind keeping a couple for bonsais but it's actually just for normal growing.
