Welcome to the site Johesian! Nice to see another West Aussie getting into Bonsaijohesian wrote:Hey guys, bit nooby just picked up a nice Juniper very young still small, never worked with bonsai but always been interested, need help with when i should start pruning, wiring and all that, if you can reply with all basics needed to lift me off that would be great

Firstly, joining a club is the best way to learn. There are a couple of clubs you can join in WA, which can provide you with everything you need to learn the art. I joined up last year, and I'm loving every moment of it. They will also run beginner courses, which are perfect if you're trying to learn. I can PM you more details if you wish
Otherwise, another great source of information (other then the forums) is the AusBonsai Wiki, which is full of helpful tips for any skill level. Is definately worth a look: https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/wiki

Anybody have any thoughts?kez wrote:Hey folks,
So after it's initial work and some good feeding this juniper is now budding back well. I have decided to use (as suggested) one of the side views as a front but this involves the removal of a few more branches.
I was wondering when it would be ok to do some more work on this tree?
Cheers,
Kez

Hi jason,
Yes the wiki is great, has been a great help to me also. What I was wondering though was when I could do further work on the tree in relation to the recovery it has shown since I first removed branches this season.
Hoping someone can help:)

Re: New Juniper, advice on direction from here
I have stopped all my major pruning/styling work on my junipers until Autumn when I can also repot. I would wait for cooler weather and just keep it alive over this heat we have coming. just mykez wrote:Hi jason,

Repot in late winter and tip rune as needed to keep it under control until then.
Fertilise weekly, fortnightly whatever you regimen is until then.

Re: New Juniper, advice on direction from here
Thought I'd update this tree,
After letting it recover and grow for a couple of months I have taken the next steps with this tree,
Keen to hear ideas on the new direction Kez

Re: New Juniper, advice on direction from here "update"
This tree has had a little refinement over the last couple of weeks and yesterday I decided to get it into a pot. It's a little big but thats the closest I could get, and it will let it grow a little which should address the slight overpotting
Here's a pic I'd love to hear thoughts on the tree's shape at this point and the pot selection
Kez

Re: New Juniper, advice on direction from here
Is that pic overexposed or is the foliage seriously yellow Kez? It certainly does not look happy in that last pic but not sure whether it is lack of feed or a reaction to the repotting or just the picture. Hoping it is the latter.

Hey shibui,
Yes it's the pic, I didn't balance it. Never fear, foliage is still the same colour as in the pic above
