While I agree that the overall image is much better when tilted, it would bury the left hand section of roots which would be a shame, IMO. I'll investigate ways to achieve a look similar to your suggestion.

It's been a couple of years and not much had happened with this Retusa. A couple of nights ago I gave it a trim and tweaked the design a bit.
