Walter Pall - Fairy Tale Style

Just saw this new post by Walter Pall and thought it would be interesting to share and discuss. I, for one, am a fan of the style although I don't really have any trees close to this. Hopefully Walter won't mind this being shared here.

The first thought I had was of bodhidharma's tree seen here:

Inspiring stuff, and I hope to add something like this to my collection some day. Not sure it's even possible, but it would be awesome.

Deborah Koreshoff's book went way down that path as well, thirty years ago. Interesting term Walter uses, "the neo-classical" style - the stereotypical pattern bonsai. Kobayashi's book "Bonsai" also has a number of very good non-standard bonsai, as does Dan Robinson.

Just saw this new post by Walter Pall

For those in Darwin, there's some lovely FTS trees on Garden's Road, just before Chin Quan Rd. No idea of the species. Photos to follow.

Best I can find on the web at short notice. Not half as good as in real life. "Rain Trees" apparently

Would you believe I grew this from a tiny cutting...I want to style it like WP FTT...

It has long internodes so I style it like maple...pinch few times to create short internodes and then grow to fatten and cut back. So it looks like a real porcupine now.

I call it deutzia...but I doubt it is...it is the nearest thing that looks like it. It looks to me like some kind of shrub...could it be of herbaceous nature???
It has mauve flowers...on long stalks at the end of the branches...and long leaves. It did not sale so it was shifted to remote corner...(I had garden centers), The roots escaped from the packet and just grew forgotten. I am a hoarder so it is hard for me to throw away plants...
For short I did not want to cheat you what it is...but maybe you can tell me.
