There is something about this tree I love and hate. I love the style. It really captures the essence of wind swept. It shows something unique yet still very bonsai. Will be one worth seeing in person.
BUT I hate that fact it's not sitting on my bench. Legendary job Bodhi.

Do your EE's take advantage of the whole growing season? I only have one myself and this was my first season with the species

Hi Jezz, i can defoliate two or three times per season if i wanted but restrict myself to once every year. Elms grow at a furious rate here and it is hard to keep up. The only time they dont do so good is if the tree hasnt been repotted.

Theres just enough movement there but I think it could be greatly enhanced through carving.

I love the idea of opening up the trunk and will check to see if i can make that happen. Thanks for the virt and i will keep you posted.

Will be one worth seeing in person.

Winter, summer what ever just a beautiful setting. Reminds me of haunting forests from the past. Not just another tree in a pot but truly very artistic. Excellent.

I often wonder what the rest of the world thinks of us in regards to Bonsai development? We get a few international Superstars (Walter for one) but they do not seem to stay long.

I don't think the Aussie names are quite as well known, but for me (being in the US) the quality of Australian bonsai is up there. I get lots of inspiration from some of you guys, and I would be just as excited to go to a workshop by Pup or Grant Bowie (to name a few - there are others) as I would by Walter or most of the US big names. The bonsai and penjing museum in Canberra is one of the top bonsai destinations (outside of Japan) on my list. You guys are doing things right, just keep it up.

I've often said that there is a massive potential form an 'Australian Bonsai Style'!
After all, there's a Chinese and Japanese style ... They are similar, why can't an Ozz style develop to be slightly different to the other two?

Hi Bodhi,
You have raised some great points in this post. For our bonsai age I think we have some very good trees here in Australia, and also bonsai artists. There are of course some countries that have age on their side and that is something that we can't really do much about. There are opportunities sometimes to gather old trees which is a good start to creating a bonsai that portrays an old tree, but, it still takes time to refine that tree to exhibit the age we would like. I think there is another Australian trait we need to be careful of, and that is the Tall Poppy Syndrome. We should be encouraging our bonsai community as much as we can. A word of praise never goes astray. It might even be what that person needs to keep trying.
