Re: Fresh squamata
Im back at home now and looking safe for the next while, so I can concentrate on getting my plants back on track. Should I cut back the dying tips now or wait to see what dies off first?

Re: Fresh squamata
For me I would trim back all the tips now, if left they will suck energy from the tree

Re: Fresh squamata
Just a quick update on this juni, has bounced back from some health issues during summer.
Going to give it a cleanup on the weekend.
Looking healthy again.

Shot of the branch structure that needs some tidying up.

Re: Fresh squamata
I would chop it just above the lowest branch if it was mine and leave some trunk for jin. It has no taper, and is too straight. JMHO.
I ask lots of questions that sound like suggestions. Please remember I am a inquisitive newbie trying to figure out why You made a particular decision, in order to learn.

Re: Fresh squamata
I think a compression of the whole tree would be a good idea.
How about some guy wires anchored from the bottom of the pot (or tree) to compress the whole top section like a spring down closer to the bottom?
Reason being I too think the tree is a bit too high and would benefit from a more compact style.
Maybe just put some wire on all the branches first and style and see what you think.

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Re: Fresh squamata
Hi golgutha,
as much as I love jins, this one may have a few that detract, rather than add to the character of the tree.
With such great trunk movement, perhaps you could consider a Bunjin ?
The first major branch to the right could be utilised as a jin.
Just a thought.
Regards.
Paul

Re: Fresh squamata
I tend to agree with the first jins being a bit silly. I'll nip em back to stubs.
That virt is certainly something to think about. Looks very good, thank you.

Better to leave them and cut them off later, then cut them off and realise you should have kept themgolgotha wrote:I tend to agree with the first jins being a bit silly. I'll nip em back to stubs.

Re: Fresh squamata
Mate, here's the thing first determine what style you want, keeping in mind that the trunk has little or no taper what so ever. Literati is a good choice for mine
The Jin could be shortened, image the situation the tree would be in nature. Mate have a look on the internet juniper literati bonsai, surely there's got to be something to look at. Keep us posted and best of luck, your tree has great potentail
Cheers Rod
