inspired by Watto.....

Post by shibui »

watto's recent thread showing how he made a bonsai stand from boards from a pallet viewtopic.php?f=29&t=18055 got me thinking and then a pallet with red timber instead of the usual pine turned up at the Yackandandah Men's shed. I managed to get it before the timber was cut up for kindling and with a bit of dressing, glueing, sawing and sanding I have managed to make these.

and here they are showing some trees

Even better there is still plenty of timber left to make another one - a little larger but lower this time I think :D

Awesome I prefer the second stand myself but better than ever I could do. Green with envy. And to think from a pallet and a scrub and polish wow.

The stand with the shimpuku looks like a tall lady with long legs bending over. :o
Very well done. Nice craftsmanship.

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Nice work Neil. I've got the timber and the tools, just nowhere to actually do stuff easily, but I'm inspired to try and have a go anyway. Now, just to find the time.

Good work, thanks for posting. How did you make the joints for the tops of the legs?

Hi Shibui, This is an excellent job, some nice timber, tree's good too! Amazing what timber you can find when you look hard enough. Must say I much prefer the larger one for its style. I must keep my eye's out for some reasonable timber, what do you think of Merbeau decking or Kwila? I have always looked at fine furniture timbers for mine but the cost from the timber yard is getting ridiculous. I must be more vigilant when looking at throwout and off cuts. Good work, Michael.

Excellent work and I too love the timber. I still maintain there is some beautiful timber out there that is free or very reasonable and it is just a matter of looking for it or even being aware of it sometimes. The leg shapes are impressive and I don't have that skill level but may now have to give it a go.

Joints are mortices cut with a 6mm router bit and tenons cut on the table saw then rounded off by hand. hardest bit was holding it all together and square while the glue set.

Cost of timber is insignificant in small projects like this Michael. It is nice to be able to put waste to a good use but the extra steps to dress it all is likely to negate the savings on buying timber.
I really hesitate to buy rainforest timbers new. Adding to the market demand just encourages bad and illegal forestry practices in areas that probably should be preserved. The high cost of premium timbers is starting to reflect its true value instead of previous unsustainable logging.
You can certainly find enough waste timber for small projects like these if you do keep eyes open. I'll certainly be looking for other possibilities as well.

Watto the curved legs were actually easier to make than the straight ones - no joints, just cut them out on the bandsaw and file/sand smooth.
