Hey tony, i wasn't saying to not dig it... i am all for digging pines! Especially as they are essentially weeds in amongst our native vegetation. I just read the article and was wondering if there was ant truth to it. I have a very old radiata that re pots fine and would love to dig one of this age. So i was mainly after others experiences of digging radiatas with aged bark to see if this might be possible. I cant see why age would make mush of a difference myself but perhaps it does???

cool jow that is exactly the way i took it and thought i had answered it. i too cannot see why it cant be done. only lack of a better knowledge in days gone past. where there is a will to learn it there is a way. if i fail i still dont believe it cant be done, just need to approach differently. so far i have collected 3 and this one makes 4. the first 3 with each day that goes past the branches are lifting higher and looking stronger. the color is vibrant and i think they want to live.

ok down to the buissness, this tree is home and it was the adventure of my bonsai life so far!
it wasn't as hairy as i first had thought, the incline at the point of the tree growing wasnt as extreme as above that point. none the less very slippery and had to cut steps into the incline. it took an hour of fiddling around the roots. easy digging and plenty roots, just hard on the back and legs from the position we were put in. just as i was cutting the tap root the wind started blasting and the heavans opened. it pays to take a stong mate with you for this kind of thing. he threw the tree on his shoulder and walked himself down the rest of the incline as i followed holding onto the rope. we made our way back up from a better place packed and got back to the car drenched but with our trophy safe and sound. heres some photos once i got it home. at some stage i will get some video footage and photos of the dig up too.

thanks ken. i cut a metre off it to fit in the car. sad i was for the taper was perfect from the bottom to the top.

lookin proud there dude & rightly so, excellent piece of timber you have acquired. i don't think you'll have any problems with survival, judging from the roots & previous experience, i reckon it'll be fine. let us know if you get any back budding, this seems to be the only problem i have with radiatas & their lanky branching from the wild. dave.
