Prunus (Cherry Blossom)

Hello everyone

Steven, I read your post "Shohin Prunus Mume" with great interest and would like to learn how to better develop these type of trees.

"Astroboy76" I hope you happen to bounce upon this post along with any others that have experience or can share info on this wonderful specie.

Below is my special Cherry Blossom that I have just started to develop. Not sure on the overall design yet so any thoughts most welcome. Whether I should trunk chop again this winter and grow a new leader or should I use the length already and try to build cascade branches?

Last season, the tree was taken right back to and I notice that the tree seems top heavy in terms of growth and lower branches, the internodes are further spaced.

I read that prunus varieties don't back bud so easily and it can be quite difficult (for me anyway as this is my 2nd season into them) to distinguish flower buds from leaf buds.

What is the best way to build branch structure and back budding?

Astroboy76 I did read your explanation in Steven's post but was still little confused and hope you can elaborate here.

All thoughts, tips and info most welcomed. Thank you.

hi,

This is actually prunus blireana. It is a cross between prunus mume and a cherry. Very easy to work with and can take a fair bit of abuse hehe.

It will ramify reasonably well and will flower freely.

i wouldnt trunk chop it lower than the lowest branch. ou could possibly cut the trunk just above the bottom right and left branches, carve it out a little and carve it down the wound at the front and start a design on the two branches remaining

you've got some beautiful material there, i was looking for something exactly like that recently!...

I recently picked up 2x very small prunus blireana trees from ray nesci in sydney and i'm going to try to grow them hopefully into something more like your fine specimen.

good luck with the styling, i'd be very keen to see the progress for some inspiration.

Cheers Astro and thats great you have identified it too. Yes it does seem to ramify quite well judging from the twigs from heaving cut backs.. a little more order and structure would be the goal for now.
