Banksia Serrata

Post by Jarrod »

Hi Guys,

Just thought I would post up the start of my progression with a large Banksia purchased for the price of a cheap dinner.

I will post more pics once the initial step is started....

In a totally unrelated topic ;) what time do people suggest air layering a Banksia and what is there success rate?

Now don't get greedy, slowly slowly. Plus its rather boring!

Once I layer the top off it will be much more interesting. So give me 12 months ok?

Be sure to keep the water up to that one over the summer Jarrod, I planted out some 3.5 metre tall ones earlier this year out of 55 litre bags and they were rootbound as. I wonder how they are in this wind?

Layer came off today, pot was full of rooots, though once sorted out, it appears it was very one sided. Hope it survives, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

At least I can wok the bottom now.

Looking Quite nicely rooted there! 8-)

No worries really if it is one sided you can always graft some more on, or ground layer again. Looks like plenty of height to work with

Thanks for the reply Ken. I have decided banksias are annoying to layer, they like to heal, ALOT! This guy has been recut 3 times. Each time it fully healed across. The lasttime I recut, I also halved the height of the top of the tree as I think it was pushing to much energy down causing it to heal. Seemed to have worked ;)

now fingers crossed it pulls through...

The base is terrific and growing really healthy after being slip potted. Will get repotted around Christmas.

Well that's a positive attitude! Thanks. Have you layered a banksia before?

No I've never layered a banksia but I have seen them come away nicely with much less root than your layer appears to have
