Grafting branches on Cupressus

Post by JaseH »

I have a what I believe to be a Cupressus sempervirens, I'd like to have a go at bud grafting some new branches to a blank section of the trunk and was wondering where to find information on how to go about this? I'm not sure this tree will ever make a great bonsai but I'm treating it as challenge, at worst I will learn a bit! I have seen the technique used on chamaecyparis and junipers but haven't had much luck finding any detailed info on the process? Anyone have any tips or pointers before I dive in?

Its probably too late to graft now. You should wait until mid March.
Use strong not weak scions (with a definite growing tip) and make sure the tree is well fed over the summer.
