Steven had a 'vested interest' in this project.

I had two of the trees I needed. The two on the left. I needed a third and knew that Steven had a similar Root Over Rock Retusa that he had acquired from the same source. Steven was generous enough to let me buy it from him so he was invited to participate in the 'construction'.

I had grown underwhelmed the two I had, hence they were volunteered for this.

I feel the trees as a group far outweigh what they were individually.

Will surely surpass the original "inspiration" you have quality rocks, trees and a beautiful tray. Along with the artistic efforts of the group!

I always stress to people, if they are planning a root over rock never use boring or rubbish rocks because the trees are likely to be much better in a few years. Rocks however will never improve.

Thanks everyone for all the positive comments in response to previous posts.
I know this sort of thing is not everyone's "cup of tea" but we like it and appreciate the interest shown in this project.

What we needed was a 'human' element. We had rocks, water and trees but we needed that 'human' element. It could be figurines, a boat, bridge, house, jetty, anything that depicted a human presence in this natural scene. All four elements had to be in balance with none dominant.

Imagine my pleasure in finding at last weekend's Sydney Bonsai Spectacular that Bonsai Artist, Janet Selby, has a collection of eight figurines crafted as the Eight Immortals of Chinese history. I immediately recognised that were of the right size so as to be in scale with the rest of the setting, they were unglazed that meant that would not dominate the setting, they would provide the 'human' element, and give this setting 'meaning'. Perfect!

I think they look great and this large suiban project is now The Figs of the Eight Immortals!
