Brown Scale treatment

Post by Black Knight »

I have an edible Fig tree hanging over the Koi pond and last season this was fully covered head to toe in Brown scale. Not wanting to spray chemicals anywhere near the fish, I left as is. New spring growth was pushing through, so something had to be done and now. Read somewhere that Canola oil was good and safe. So last week out with a brush and the Canola pulling the branches away from pond. In one week growth everywhere even with some oil on foliage. Most of the scale has fallen off, the remainder of the scale falls off with just a touch.
So, has possibilities for use on Bonsai trees where appropriate.

Oils will kill most scale. Usually easier to emulsify it with water and spray on but wiping it on as you have done will also be effective. Wiping with metho is also effective.
Usually need a follow up treatment after a couple of weeks to kill any new ones that the first treatment missed or that have hatched in the meantime.

I found birds do a lot of picking off leaves and stems but from in ground plants, not so much my bonsai. I like the Canola oil though treatment, the problems with white oil though, so I learned at TAFE horticulture classes. Not to treat all the leaves at once. Something to do with the stomatas being clogged. This would be on waxy large leafed plants like - philodendroms. Luv the idea of a koi pond. They'd rid you of any water born insects, especially mossies. My friend has a beauty, some of the fish are nearly 2 feet long. But filtered and aerated of course.
