Re: [Shane] Japanese White Pine
Thanks all. Haven't cut the tree since November, which is end of spring here. Don't plan on cutting it now at all in summer. Above is a suggested virt not my work on the tree, and it is not the first time removing the top trunk has been suggested to me. What is not immediately obvious from a 2D photo is that the suggested replacement trunk comes out from behind the lower trunk, instead of on front. This would look quite unnatural in my opinion, and so I am simply nursing that idea for now. I know the foliage needs to come back towards the trunk, however that's easier said than done in a pine. I have some back budding on the top now and am encouraging this, while slowly shortening the apex. Cheers Shane.

No change here. Trying a different, no nitrogen fertiliser mix for a few months.

Worked on this tree this morning, and grafted a branch onto the trunk to help eventually reduce the length of the trunk compared to the lower branch. Hope it takes. Also started some shari on the outer side of the trunk to become wind blown scarring.

Re: [Shane] Japanese White Pine
So, about a week after doing that graft, I learned from Michael Simmonetto how to do it properly at a club meeting, using sphagnum moss, wire and a plastic bag. Turns out, I bought the tree from him too, before I knew who he was. He recognised his tree, even after all I'd done to it.
While I am seriously considering removing the entire top half of the trunk line (as pictured below), I want to see if the graft takes, so this is the current state of this tree's progression.
