Tridents Uprooted

Post by Phoenix238 »

Hi guys, my tridents have been attacked! Our 2yo got into them and pulled them all out, roots and all :palm: :x :shake:

The ones with leaves are looking very withered as I didn't discover them until I got home from work, I've given them a good water and a douse of seasol. What are the chances of survival? :( :? Most of these didn't have many roots as I removed most of them Shibui style

They may be OK - I would strip all the leaves off and keep up the Seasol in some shade. And chain up the 2yo

Very tempting, on so many occasions. The other 3 too!

Thanks guys, figured there's no reason to panic as the damage is already done, will do my best to keep them protected from the elements :fc:

And the tornado :palm:

Has everyone else's tridents leafed out? Only 1 of these has started growing leaves and I'm a bit worried. They still show green with a scratch test but I thought they would have broken dormancy/started growing again with the hot weather we've had here recently

Hi Phoenix238 , 99 % of mine have bolted , however there are a few like yours are green to the test but still dormant along with a few other species . Its a strange start to the season , I have noticed a considerable difference from last year .

Hi there,

You could probably get away with just watering your trees. Don't worry about the Seasol or other chemicals until the plant has recovered from transpiration shock and reactivated. In my experience with Trident Maples the only thing you'll achieve by fertilising a shocked tree is to burn off new leaves which we don't want so just water. :imo:

Cheers and good luck,

Brad75.

I had a trident early on, and it came in a very small pot, i moved it to a bigger pot probhably about this time of year, and within a week it was pretty much dead. When i asked the lady at the nursery what happened she simply asked "did you try and repot it?"

Her conviction in saying repoting it this time of year is sure to kill it made me question why she didnt decide to tell me that when i purchased it, but anyway!

Point of the story is despite my wife asking consistently why im bothering to keep it and water it (it was on the shelf with the rest, so i saw no harm in just letting it sit there and get a water), the next season it just start sprouting agian and is now one of my strongest maples... mainly because the other two got chewed up by my dog .... I havn't had much luck with maples, but they are also recovering well!

Maples seem very sensitive to small changes when it comes to cosmetics, they'll quickly drop their leaves and regress.. but they seem to hang in there and just gain their strength back, and recover next season.

Thanks for your story scooter, you've given me some hope. Was planning on putting these in the ground at the parents house when they showed signs of recovery (we're only renting) but guess I'll wait till next year for that
