Seeking advice to help save a Bonsai gifted tree

I think this tree has passed. Scratch the bark to see if it is green underneath. This tree should have been watered every day and kept outside. If it is still green under the bark put in shade and water will seasol every day. good luck

its completely dead. Perhaps you can plant the same variety into the original pot.

I concur, It is what I refer to as a "finished tree" Sorry.
Grab another small tree of the same variety from a nursery, and repot into your pot. Then read up on the wiki on how to keep it alive and healthy.

Or maybe try a hardier species next time. That one looks like it may have been an azalea - they can be difficult even for experienced growers.

Also remember you are not the first person to lose a bonsai. I think everyone here has killed at least a couple
