Bush fire bonsai grouping, has it been done?

Post by Jarad »

I drove through Wyong on the Central Coast of NSW where there was a fire in October 2013, the bush has bounced back well in most places and the trees have tonnes of new growth sprouting everywhere.

This got me thinking, has anyone been brave enough to recreate a bushfire scene within a small native bonsai grouping (with or without actual fire)?

Would the bonsai bounce back in the same way?

Could the recreation of these bush fire affected trees be accepted within the Aussie bonsai community as a new style?

I don't trust Bonsai, they are a little shady.

I have used fire to regenerate native trees on more that one occasion. Melaleucas and Callestimons, mainly I use a butane gas flame from a camp cooker. I do protect the live foliage. There are posts of this here.

One of the members of the BSV had a eucalyptus(red box?) at the meeting last night and commented that he simulated a bushfire to stimulate back budding lower down on the trunk.

Yeah, I think its a great style and very iconic to australia :) here are a couple of threads...

Pup's 'Fire-swept' Mel (love this one): viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16695&p=169496&hili ... PT#p169496

And there is quite a nice (albeit old) discussion here on the subject: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=6437&hilit=FIRE+SWEPT

Lindsay Farr does one one at the end of this film http://vimeo.com/68894977

No actual fire used, but he creates the appearance of there having been a bush fire.

Thanks Pup, JaseH, Jason and NAHamilton! Excellent reading material and inspiration.

Pup, I will continue to groom the forums for more of your posts (where I assume there will be more photos).

Whatever happened to Mitchell? He seemed to be quite enthusiastic with his burning. viewtopic.php?f=104&t=6869&p=81320&hili ... uca#p81320

Now, to acquire some natives.
