Any clues on what caused this dieback on my fig?
All the fine growth died. The tree has shot back on a mix of newer and older wood. I checked the roots and they looked fine. There is a bit of insect damage, but nothing out of the ordinary. Perhaps there is some fungal infection.
I have sprayed the tree with confidor and anti-fungal, so these causes should now be treated.
The tree is recovering, but not jumping out of its skin, as it should at this time of year.

Re: Fig dieback
I see something like this on my PJs but usually in winter and spring. Usually associated with yellow or spotted leaves that then drop off. I put it down to fungal infection because mine are kept in an unheated poly tunnel over winter to protect from frost so they are probably kept more humid and cooler than they really like it??
So far they have always recovered without any treatment. Apart from a few branches dieing back mostly seems to be doing more good than harm because the trees sprout back with masses of new buds along the branches and trunk so I get plenty of ramification.
