Stands for Competition
I'm doing this year's Easter Show bonsai competition - and I'm in need of display stands. I don't practice a style of bonsai that particularly values stands, so I've never kept any, and it didn't even occur to me to seek them out until now.
So, if I'm going shopping for stands, who do you all think I need to pay a visit to first?

I think your best bet would be Leong from Bonsai South in Caringbah or Ray Nesci in Dural.
Best to make a call to see if they have any.

Re: Stands for Competition
All The bonsai nurseries in Sydney usually have a good range but I think most are on Ebay or built to suit the trees
Hope the trees do well
I will be away so will not get to see them or put any in myself

Re: Stands for Competition
Thats a good question Ken. I'm relatively new to the club so I missed last years display and I also missed the last club meeting that gave us all of the info so I don't know too much about it. I just called Sue the vice president and asked if I could volunteer and she gave me a date and time! I think they will be there from the 1st until the 8th but Im not 100 percent sure.......kcpoole wrote:How come no one has posted a topic on this yet to advertise it?Island Breeze wrote:I'm volunteering at the Sydney City Bonsai Club display on Easter Saturday![]()

Communication is immensely important and the Web / Internet / forums is a great way to get news out to the masses (FB / Twitter / Instagram et al, is no good IMHO as it is an invite only environment).
Posting info early and often is the way to encourage people to visit and expand. I post any event for the School or elesewhere that i am involved here as soon as I find out as people these days are time poor and need to plan their lives.

Yeah I 100 percent agree Ken. I only found out I was going on Sunday and I still don't actually know what the set up will be. Will definitely post future events when Im aware of them!
Im laughing because the original question I asked in this thread is about an event that I know nothing about and can't find any info!

Re: Stands for Competition
From memory, the Bonsai competition is the 3rd and 4th - so Easter Friday and Saturday. I didn't post anything about it before the close of entries because I assumed everybody here already knew about this stuff!
I've gone a little overboard this year - I've submitted to enter 13 trees, though come competition day I doubt I'll actually get that many in. I was expecting to have my dad to help me prepare and transport trees, but he won't be in town so I'll be limiting myself to a car load and only trees that I can load and unload by myself. It's a long-running competition (which is why I thought most of you knew about it) - I think my first of these was in 2003 or 2004. I haven't done this competition since 2006 or 2007, when I was still doing the bonsai demonstrations at the show.
It should be fun this year - I'm putting in some of my "avant-garde" stuff that I'm sure will score poorly, but this year I'm also submitting a few pieces in both traditional Japanese and Chinese styles to test how my skills hold up when judged on Japanese criteria.

Not the most exciting presenter to watch, but he demystified (for me anyway) the clever art of woodwork. Now to change the profile of those feet from a basic form and sculpt with a router or fine jig-saw ... Crikey, I'm still struggling to create one tree - I won't need one of these for a while yet!

Cheers
