Fig Fusing

Newcastle Bonsai Club had the opportunity to visit Linh's place a couple of month's ago. He has quite a few figs he has grown this way. He uses mostly tiger figs.

This is Linh explaining how he will do a similar thing with some trident maples he has grown and will attach them to a stump so they will eventually fuse together and look like one tree.

Wow! Those look incredible!

I have only really seen quite small, young figs, and they were actually pretty off-putting. Seeing these though... maybe I should get a fig...

I have about 20 photos of fused figs and about 80 photos of Linh's trees and landscapes but I don't think members would appreciate me posting so many.
I have fused peach seedlings successfully and one has a fruit on it this season. I've also done it with figs, of course, umbrella trees and after seeing several self-grafted trunks on a crab apple I dug up a few weeks ago, I am trying it on some 2yr old seedlings I grew.

Thanks for the Pics Penny. I bought a nice stock PJ the other day to use as the centre piece, looking for my other various sizes now. I'll also try a bunch of Tigers and then trunk chop them after a few years.

Consider using Fileshare as a free member to transfer the pics to other members. (online file transfer service)

there are articles in Bonsai today on it, and online. Good to see it happening here.

this is something i will be trying as soon as i can propagate the seedlings to do it, but i was going with a wire frame shaped to what i want. there is a few sites on the maple fusing techniques, i thought i posted about this a while ago...

i was going to do it with elms but researching it it might not work as well with elms as they stay rounder and keep that roundness when bound together.

petal i promise i will get those pictures for you tommorow, i have been so busy its not funny but its fathers day tomorrow and i can bonsai and do what i want all day so you will get the pictures of what i am doing!!

Penny i was lucky enough to visit his place a couple of weeks ago when i was south and was amazed at his figs. I thought i could grow them up here but he is doing some stuff!!!! did you see his ladscapes. He uses almost always pines and junipers on rocks etc. Some of these trees are 30 years old and stay constantly wet due to the arrangment, grown under shade cloth year round with only 3-4 hours of sun. Goes against all you read yet his junipers are so lush?

as promised petal here is a couple of pics, i have to apologise bout the quality, the mother in law took her camera back so they are done on a mobile phone camera. nothing flash but gives ya an idea.
sorry about the size to the phone camera takes small pictures and thats it!
but as you can see (if you can see) the trees are together and there is no need to keep them wrapped up any more, they will continue to come together over time. with more aireal roots going down it will hep aswell.
there are three little australian figs in this one.
the trunks have been chopped down at different levels, i do intend on a bit of carving and smoothing off of the staight chops, but they back bud really well, it was a full bush just before this and sorry i have no before photos of that. i wasnt able to get them without the camera.
now for these to fuse together it has taken about 18 months, will probly be another 2 years before the aireal roots grow thick enough to fuse to the trunk which will greatly improve the overall look and fluting!

Hi Noah 78.
His stuff is amazing. I have plenty of photos of his landscapes too.
I have enough trouble getting the computer to work let alone try anything fancy. If anyone can help with those programs mentioned, I'd be happy to send the photos on and they can set them up - neither my computer nor me is up to that challenge.
