Bonsai south Juniper

Post by serene.gardens »

So i finally got around to styling this 1990 juniper i got from loeng around november last year.
An awesome tree with great movement ,jin and shari on the trunk. The only downside to the tree was the fact that 75% of the foliage was coming from the apex.the branch that supported the apex was quite long and thick. With the thickness of the trunk and the height of the apex i know i would have to reduce the height of the tree considerably to make a more compact and strong tree. After i decided on my front, removed unnecessary branches i set about splitting the apex branch along the middle, wrapping it, then wiring it and bending it down. After lowering it as far as my strength could get it(about an inch and a half),i tied it of to a turn buckle to then lower it another inch and a half. After this i left the tree for about two months just to make sure it pulled through. If the branch had even lost half of the foliage the tree would have been pretty much ruined, which was alittle nerve racking considering it was the most expensive tree i had ever purchased. The tree didn't miss a beat so afew weeks ago i set about wiring every brach all the way to the tips.I then used the tree in a demo i did for bimmer bonsai society in brisbane last week. The demo was more about refinement and branch placement instead of a major before and after transformation.Below are the pics.I filmed most of the process so when its ready for its final pot(a while away i know) i will post the full video.Still needs some work on the jin and shari but not in any rush.

Looks really good Andrew, I always struggle to see anything in these staked junipers but you've done a great job.

I'd be interested in seeing under the foliage to have a peak at the branch placement. Also did you trim the tops of the pads?

Looking forward to your video, they're always good.

Hello Andrew,

That is some superb and crisp detail work you have done. I think it is time you come travelling and teach us a thing or two!
