Emergency Hothouse

Post by fossil finder »

Cooee all
Recently came across a poor fellow trimming a 8-10m swamp cypress I had been admiring fo a while. I had even innocently wondered what size box one would need if one were to find themselves in a situation where one needed to be removed. Anyway when I saw all these 4m long limbs laying on the ground I decided go ask the question.
As I didn't have room in a hothouse to put them I modified brocolli cases. I use brocolli cases cut down to 18cm high to raise seeds so it gave me the idea to add to use the top half of a case attached to the top of another case by ducting tape. This makes it possible to take cuttings in the 30cm range.

Using a serrated steak knife I cut the center out of the lid and glued bubblewrap (improve insulation) to allow light in. I ended up with 60 cuttings in 6 cases up to 40mm diameter. I used a pen to push a plug out of the end of each case which allows basic control of humidity. The plugs can easily be pressed back into hole partly or fully. The cases work well and give me some confidence that the swampy cuttings will take.

Hah! Ozzie ingenuity at its best - awesome idea, hope they all make it!

Perhaps some more pics to see more than what you have got here (more angles) ... very clever.
Cheers

Cheers Elmo
In this shot you can see conical shaped plug on end of crate that is pushed out using the e blunt end of a biro, pencil or simliar. When punching out drainage holes for base I push from inside out so holes are less likely to act like a funnel and block themselves.
Another advantage of this material is all light entering box is bounced around by the white interior. That said these need to be in a well lit envirorment to be effective due to high sides. On cut down boxes plenty of light enters the roof of box due to lower sidesImage

Well done hope they take good luck :fc:
A stick in a pot is better than no stick at all. Remember even the best bonsai started as a stick.
