Juniper Procumbens restyle

Post by Sean M »

I picked up this tree from a show in 2013.
SBT002 - Juniperus Procumbens - Original.jpg
It had some basic styling done to it but the branches seemed to go off at bad spots, the existing branches were very leggy and the branches I needed were quite a few years away. I liked the main line of the tree and decided that I could use one of the branches for a shohin literati (or little-rati as they shall now be known) :palm:

I have reduced the foliage over the last 2 years and played around with some of the branches (which I don't have photos for, sorry)

It has to undergo some more shari/carving/jin work next year but I think it is on a good path.

Constructive comments always welcome.

Sean,

I have the same comment for the cedar, and that is to try to get more movement into the edge lines of the sharis. Both trees have very straight trunk sections that would benefit from a bit of softening visually.

You seem to like the literati style. Must admit I do too, but it's a difficult style to do well.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply Andrew,
yes the plan is to develop the shari on both trees. I'm taking my time with these two, as the last time i did major carving I killed the tree. :shake:

Yours has more movement in the trunk. With some time and ramification it will look quite nice.

Thanks.

Another three years and I hope it'll be OK.
Big scary bit is the necessary pot size reduction at the next re-pot

Hey Sean,
I think you need to go a little deeper with your Shari. Near that first big right hand bend you can see a strip of white heart wood, but the rest of the Shari is an orangy-brown colour.

I'm also assuming that the orangy-brown bit is still sticky with sap?

Have you got a new picture?

No pics just yet. Shift work tends to slow down the process a bit.
The shari will be worked on over the next few weeks, or months, depending on the bonsai/family time ratio.
