Prunus and Malus pruning

Post by glenabercrombie »

I have recently purchased a prunus and malus crabapple from Ray Nesci. I was wondering if now is the best time to prune and wire?
I want to remove some of the smaller branches and shorten the larger ones.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Glen,
You can do your pruning on these at any time of year. It is certainly easier to see what you are doing when there is no leaves so winter is usually the preferred pruning season but you should also trim new growth through summer as well to get a good shape and plenty of ramification.
Neither of these trees will start to grow until the weather warms up in spring but pruning now will not do any harm.
