Terrey Hills show Juniper demonstration tree

Post by hugh grant »

This tree i worked on at the Bonsai society of Sydney show at Terrey Hills a few weeks back.
Its a clients tree whom asked me to work on it so i thought id do the last part of the work as the demonstration which consisted of the structural setting of major branches and the fine wiring. The foliage mass isnt very dense so the work is very open but will fill in over the coming growing season and those after it in the future. Prior to the demonstration the dead wood was created and live veins found around the trunk. The feature of this tree is the fantastic dead wood at the base which has a lovely snake like quality to the jin that sits around the base. The angle was quite dramatically changed and will be repoted either at the end of spring if there is a lot of growth or next season if it is a bit slower than satisfactory.
I am looking forward to following this trees future!

Great work as always Hugh with some fairly challenging material! I love the thickness of the trunk, what kind of juniper is it? Looks a bit like a grey owl?

Cheers for posting,

I'll have a guess at sabina juniper? I'm reserving my opinion on the new planting angle and am looking forward to the next installment of the story.

I prefer the up-right position; looks more interesting, in my opinion.
Likewise - great work, hope to see more future pics.

We are not sure of what it is but our best guess is Juniperus horizontalis 'andorra compacta'

That is a nice Juni and I can only wonder where it came from and how old?

Question Grant.. I have a pine with deadwood at the front like the Juni as in the last photo.

Would you just encourage the roots to grow straight down? How would you encourage roots to work it with the deadwood?

If you look to the left there is a live vein that runs into the soil, that is supporting the left side of the tree. there is one at the back which curls around the front on the right also that supports the rest of the tree. when it is repotted at this angle the roots will be pushed downward. to meet the new soil surface. most upon inspection are growing in the new 'downward' orientation anyway. the way the tree is sitting with the roots heading backwards is quite easy to rectify really. If in a shallower pot and slight mounding at the back with the trunk sitting right at the front of the pot, it will go in without much hassle into a ceramic pot.

This is an update on the tree since I got it back. Not alot has been done to it since we slip potted it into its upright position, its been left to go wild and regain energy.
I've had fun collaborating with Hugh on this tree so far and the season ahead there's some big plans for it.

Im absolutely loving the winter foliage atm.

Evidence of Hugh's enormous effort to save this tree from mediocrity.

It hasnt taken long for it to 'bark up' again, and the live veins are swelling nicely, to produce that contrast between live and dead wood.

Depending on if I can find the right one, something unorthodox.

Nice trees you have there mate.

Might be a good idea to get a custom pot made.
