You will get different opinions on this one and everyone thinks they are the only one who is correct.
Personally I have mostly root pruned hard and reduced the top at the same time but on recommendation of other experienced growers I have also tried root pruning with very little top reduction and that seems to work here as well.
To me, that just shows that there is more than one way to grow a bonsai.
