I bought a topiary and you know how they are. I wanted to chop it when removing the layer, and the more foliage you have the faster the layer roots.. It was rotten already when I bought it.
Love the way yours is developing. They are such rewarding trees. Back bud as crazy, easy to look after and dont need leaf reduction.

Nice Alpine and it combines with the colour of the drum pot well. You would think it wouldnt with the light coloured bark, but it does.

Hi Bodhi , mate i had a choice of blue , green , white , cream and beige all in drum pots . This was the best looking combination . Now i got this right i will have to see if i can maintain the right choices in future pot / tree combinations .

A quick update on this one . It was hit by another frost undercover of all things so it has been cut back rather severely burning all the new growth shoots off

G'day Alpineart,
What made you choose the new pot?
Liking to learn, not criticize, but I thought it looks 'fresher' with the lighter pot...

I've got one of these, tall and skinny, lacking taper so I'm watching with interest!

Hi Elmar , I needed a bigger pot and this was the only spare i had at the time , I never worry about pots or wiring when developing trees . The cream drum was a better choice for the finished tree to resided in , however it didn't allow for enough root run which is required to improve the narebri . I will most likely put it back if the root mass has done the job required which it is surely lacking .

Good to know. Funny how I missed hear little tricks earlier on!
I want to do a couple of air layers on this one, both for practice and to reduce the size (should also put in there 'hedge my Bets' to increased chance of surviving specimen!!). Might then have to consider putting it in a larger pot, as you suggest, to develop the nebari.
This summer will test my learning from last year!

Hi Elmar , mate this has had a naked section at the base and is reluctant to send out roots , I should have checked the roots when i trimmed it . I may apply the tooth pick method or simply remove a thin slice and coat with hormone powder to stir up a result

I take it they heal well!?!? What if you were to 'split' the base of the trunk @ ground level, then apply rooting hormone and wrap the whole lot to keep it sterile/clean in order to flare the base... Too radical?

Hi Elmar , this has a beautiful flared base under the soil level , if only i can get some nice roots groing there it can then be lifted 20-30mm to show off the flare .
