Flowering Quince

Post by treeman »

A good flowering this year but tree is very frustrating in that it is almost impossible to get it to branch. Cut a branch and it just sends out one new leader. Maybe 2 if I'm really lucky. I also would prefer some more lines coming from lower down. Looks like grafting is ahead?
16 years from a cutting. About 30 x 40cm

Your frustrations are why you now see so many chojubai in Japanese exhibitions and hardly any regular flowering quince.

Hey Treeman...very nice indeed...! With only 16 yrs from a cutting it looks pretty spectacular. I'm interested at giving my hand ago at a Quince in the not too distant future. Wondering if you had this ground grown for several yrs and then worked on building secondary and tertiary branching...? Also what types of grafts are you going to be using...? Another pic with something to show scale would be great.

Yes I do believe it is.
@ Bonsaiforest, it has never seen the ground, always in a pot. If I graft I'll try just simple side grafts here and there. I also cut partly through a couple of the bigger roots to see if it stimulate a new shoot from there too.
@ Jow, Yes I think so. Most of the speciosas in the books look REALLY old. However chojus and these are so very different. You simply MUST have both!

Hi treeman,

Great tree,

There is a great read on this species (Bonsai Unearthed Blog, Refinement techniques-Pseudocydonia sinensis)
