Need help on direction of tree

Post by jozcoz »

Hello everyone!

This is my first to Ausbonsai, so please forgive me if this has been done incorrectly.

This post is about one of my junipers (Was my very first tree). I haven't had too much trouble when its come to seeing a direction in my other trees. But from the very first day I owned this tree I've struggled to see any potential ideas. I thought I'd just leave the tree alone until something came to me. But I'm finally admitting defeat and I've come looking for some help, advice, suggestions or anything!

To me I feel the tree is quite unbalanced. I haven't really done anything drastic to the tree except basic maintenance. I still consider myself most definitely on the beginnerish side, so as I said all advice is very welcome.

There's probably potential in there for a 'bunjingi' but you'd have to take about 1/3rd of the tree off to achieve it.

Thanks! I'll start trying to maybe draw it out and try to imagine what I have to do. I'd love some more advice from anyone else on this forum

That first branch on the left (at the soil level) doesn't really look right.

I would chop it off, unless you want to use it at a later date to graft branches a bit higher up the trunk. Some shari would add some character to the trunk too

Grab some cloth or a t-shirt, cover sections of the tree and take a step back and have a look to see if anything jumps out. Have a look for threads by Kez, he's got some excellent progressions that you could use for inspiration.

I'm not really a fan of bunjin or literati (but that's just me). I would be tempted to chop it in half, as to where exactly I wouldn't be able to tell you.

Before you upload photos, open them in Paint and resize the images untill they are below 1Mb so you can upload them directly to the site. Check out these threads:

I don't trust Bonsai, they are a little shady.
